Colorado has the longest operating history of any recreational cannabis market in the United States. Amendment 64 passed on November 6, 2012 — the same night as Washington state's Initiative 502 — and Colorado opened recreational sales to the public on January 1, 2014, becoming the first jurisdiction in the world to run a fully regulated adult-use cannabis retail system. That twelve-year head start over most U.S. markets has produced a fundamentally different price environment than what consumers encounter in Illinois or even Nevada: wholesale cannabis prices in Colorado have compressed to levels that seemed impossible in 2014, when ten-dollar-per-gram flower was the norm at dispensaries along South Broadway.

We track 37 Colorado dispensaries, and all of them are on the Front Range: 28 in Denver, 6 in Boulder and 3 in Aurora. The Denver stores are weighted toward the South Broadway corridor running south out of the Baker neighborhood, where Colorado Harvest Broadway, Golden Meds Broadway CO, LiveWell Broadway CO and Reefer Madness Broadway CO sit within a short stretch of one another; the rest are spread through the Highlands and the northwest side, the downtown and RiNo approach, and single locations on Sixth Avenue and out to Federal Heights. Boulder is The Farm North Boulder CO, Magnolia Road Boulder Rec and Native Roots Boulder — a grower, an independent and a chain outpost, three stores and no cluster. Aurora is Good Chemistry Aurora CO and Medicine Man Aurora CO. Each now has a city page of its own. The twelve resort-town stores we tracked in the mountains were retired in September 2026, so nothing here covers Aspen, Vail or the Roaring Fork valley. Colorado charges a 15% retail marijuana sales tax and, since July 1, 2017, no 2.9% state sales tax on retail marijuana; in Denver the city's 10.65% and 1.1% in district taxes bring the total to 26.75% on every product.

The Colorado market in 2026 is defined by the steepest long-run price compression of any U.S. cannabis state. Flower that retailed for $250–$300 per ounce in 2014 now commonly sells for $60–$120 per ounce at Denver metro stores, with promotional pricing pushing select bulk eighths below $20. This is the market that has set the benchmark for what a mature legal cannabis economy eventually looks like: retail competition driving prices toward production cost, operators differentiating on brand and experience rather than scarcity, and consumers in a genuine buyer's market. Every other state we track is at an earlier stage of that same trajectory.

Colorado dispensary questions

Is cannabis legal in Colorado?

Yes. Colorado legalized adult-use cannabis under Amendment 64, which passed November 6, 2012 and took effect December 10, 2012. Recreational sales launched January 1, 2014. The most a store may sell one adult at a time is 1 ounce of flower or the equivalent in other products; the most an adult may carry is 2 ounces. Colorado residents and out-of-state visitors have faced the same purchase limits since 2016 (House Bill 16-1261). Cannabis may not be transported across state lines regardless of the destination state's laws.

How much is cannabis taxed in Colorado?

Colorado charges a 15% retail marijuana sales tax and, since July 1, 2017, no 2.9% state sales tax on retail marijuana. Denver adds 10.65% (a 5.15% general sales tax and a 5.5% special marijuana sales tax), and the Regional Transportation District and the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District add 1% and 0.1%, so the total in Denver is 26.75% on every product. Outside Denver, local rates vary by municipality — Boulder, Aurora, and other cities each set their own. All rates are applied to the retail menu price at checkout.

Why are Colorado cannabis prices so low compared to other states?

Colorado has operated a recreational cannabis market since 2014 — longer than any other U.S. state. Over twelve-plus years, licensed cultivation capacity has grown dramatically, wholesale prices have compressed near production cost, and retail competition across 700+ licensed retailers statewide has driven margins to commodity levels. States like Illinois that launched recreational sales in 2020 are still years behind on that same price-compression curve. Colorado shelf prices for comparable flower sit well below Illinois's; our Denver and Chicago flower pages show both, read the same morning.

Which area has the best dispensary deals in Colorado?

Denver metro stores — particularly those on the South Broadway corridor and East Colfax — produce the most consistent deal pricing in our tracking data. Aurora stores (Good Chemistry Aurora CO, Medicine Man Aurora CO) are also highly competitive. Boulder stores carry a 10–15% price premium over Denver metro on average, reflecting higher real estate costs and a premium-skewing customer base. The Longmont location (JARS Longmont) represents good value in the northern Front Range.

Can I visit a Colorado dispensary as a tourist?

Yes. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government ID may purchase cannabis at any Colorado recreational dispensary regardless of state or country of residence. You may purchase up to 1 ounce per transaction. Consumption is limited to private residences — smoking or vaping cannabis in public spaces, parks, or on hotel property where it is not permitted is a civil infraction.
