The Detroit suburbs we read, store by store

Four towns that said yes to cannabis retail, seven menus that answered on 13 October, and no tax line to cross. The companion to our Detroit Suburbs deal page: where each store we read sits, how close it is to downtown, and which Detroit roads lead to it.

As of 18 October 2026, the median price across 200 dispensary deals in Michigan is $10.00, with half priced between $5.00 and $18.00. Read directly from 65 dispensary menus, not supplied by the stores.

Three towns begin at 8 Mile, and the tax does not change there

8 Mile Road is Detroit's northern edge, and three of the four towns on our Detroit Suburbs page begin right on it. Our page lists 8 stores in Ferndale, Hazel Park, Eastpointe and Lincoln Park, and on the morning of 13 October 2026 seven of them returned a menu: Pleasantrees in Lincoln Park, Green Buddha Ferndale in Ferndale, Green Pharm Hazel Park in Hazel Park, JARS Hazel Park in Hazel Park, King of Budz in Ferndale, Nature's Remedy Ferndale in Ferndale and JARS in Eastpointe. Every town on the page returned at least one menu. Leaving Detroit does not change the bill: Michigan charges a 10% excise and 6% sales tax on the price plus the excise, 16.6% in all, and Treasury lists no city or county cannabis tax. What changes is the rulebook for licensing and hours, which each town writes for itself.

That makes this a different guide from its Chicago equivalent, where the suburbs are a tax decision. Here the reasons to cross the line are a menu, an hour and a drive. On 13 October the suburbs answered with seven readable menus and Detroit with seven, so a Detroit shopper had as many shelves to read beyond the city line as inside it.

Where each store we read sits, measured from downtown

King of Budz is in Ferndale, 10 miles from downtown Detroit in a straight line, in Oakland County. Woodward Avenue runs north out of the city, crosses 8 Mile and carries on through Ferndale, which makes it the natural stop for anyone on the north end of Woodward. JARS is in Eastpointe, 11 miles out, in Macomb County, where Gratiot Avenue leaves Detroit's east side. Pleasantrees is in Lincoln Park, 9 miles away and the only store on the page south of the city, in Wayne County's Downriver suburbs; Fort Street, out of Southwest Detroit, is the road there.

Hazel Park, on I-75 just east of Ferndale, carries one store on our list, and it did not return a menu that morning; a second Hazel Park store left our list on 13 October after a blank storefront every night from 10 October. Our roster places each suburban store at its town's coordinate rather than its door, so the miles in the table are town to downtown and will be off by a little for any single store. They are good enough to tell a Southwest Detroit shopper that Lincoln Park is the short trip and Eastpointe is not.

Opt-in is the whole map

Michigan's law left the decision to each city, village and township. The Cannabis Regulatory Agency's municipal guide, revised in March 2026, sets out the two routes: a municipality opts out with an ordinance that completely prohibits adult-use businesses, or opts in with one that authorizes them and may cap their number. At the end of January 2025 the agency counted 139 municipalities in and 1,370 out. Our reading of those numbers, and it is an inference: a suburban store sits in one of the few towns that said yes, as near as it can get to the many that said no.

Each town where we read a menu has a licensed retailer, which it could not have if it had prohibited them. That is as far as our sources go. We could not reach each town's ordinance on an official page, so we print no license caps or local conditions for them. If you live in an Oakland or Macomb County town with no store of its own, the nearest one may be in the next town over, and the price there carries the same tax as it would at home.

Hours, and the Detroit stores on the other side of the line

Hours are the one practical difference a city line can make. Detroit's Ordinance 2022-11 holds its dispensaries to 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; each of these suburbs sets its own rules, and we found none we could verify on an official source, so we print no hours for them. Check the store page before a late drive. Inside the city on 13 October we read ZAZA, Cloud Cannabis, Hyde Cannabis, 420 Factory Detroit, High Club Detroit, Pure Options Detroit Detroit and URB Cannabis Detroit, and our Detroit guide covers them.

The rules for using what you buy do not change at 8 Mile either: private property with the owner's consent, never a car on the road, never a public place, and nothing carried home across a state line. Our Detroit Metro zone holds 16 stores, city and suburbs together, and we read their menus every morning around 8 AM ET.
